Tips for Setting up Your Home Office

626

When you decide to start and run your own business out of your home, your office setup might not be the first thing you think of. It is important, though, to have a comfortable and workable space to use as your office. Here are some tips to get you off to a good start.

Create a Dedicated Space

You need a space in your home that is dedicated to your office, where you can leave your work out without it being in the way. You should at least have a desk in a corner of a room where you can work undisturbed. You may want to set up a screen to divide your space from the rest of the room. Be sure to get your own dedicated business phone line, too. It will sound much more professional when your clients call and get your business message rather than your family’s voicemail greeting.

Get Ergonomic Furniture

Make sure the furniture you are using is ergonomic. You are going to be sitting in that chair for a long time, and you don’t want to get a sore back. Both your chair and desk should be adjustable. If you can’t adjust your desk, add a keyboard tray so that your keyboard is at the correct height. If you use a laptop, consider getting a separate monitor, so that you can raise the monitor up instead of looking down at the laptop screen.

Think About Storage

You will need more than just a desk and a chair for your home office. You will have files and office supplies that will need to be put somewhere. Consider getting a filing cabinet and some shelves, and place them close by your desk. If you have to wander all over the house to find your files and supplies, you will not be very productive.

Follow these tips to have a home office you can be proud of. Once you have your office set up so that it is comfortable for you, you will be able to focus on your business and make it a success.
